“Smarketing”

November 10, 2020
9:00 am – 10:30 am (central)
Presentation by Terra Davidson

When sales and marketing align within a business, great things can happen. And that’s smarketing.
Smarketing is the alignment between your sales and marketing teams created through frequent and direct communication. As companies continue to increase the percentage of leads that originate from inbound marketing, the relationship between sales and marketing becomes a critical area of organizational design.
We can say that our teams work together and that silos do not exist, but do we know that? Or at the end of the day, are these departments sharing information but still acting independently of each other?
In this session we will talk about how to work to integrate smarketing into your organization to maximize results.
Speaker Bio:
Terra Davidson is a veteran in the home building industry. After graduating with a major in marketing, she joined the Consumer Strategies Group where she fell in love with the new home building industry. She joined the Calgary Home Builders Association as the Managing Director of the newly formed Built Green™ program. Here she was instrumental in helping the Association launch this important initiative to the home building community. The passion for marketing green building led her to Avalon Master Builder where she started as the Brand Manager, added Service Manager, and then Sales Manager and Interior Designer and ultimately landed her as the Director of Sales and Marketing and Partner.
Terra views herself as a ‘change agent’ that wants to challenge status quo in the home building industry. ‘Because we have always done it that way’, just isn’t an answer she can accept. This passion led her to the PHBI where instruction allows her to work with individuals and teams to help be the best versions of themselves and to build strong teams that work together instead of in departmental silos and always put the customer first!

“Integrating Air Tightness to Performance Path: The Cost-effective way to any energy target”

November 12, 2020
9:00 am – 10:30 am (central)
Presentation by Amelie Caron

Air barriers have been a challenging detail throughout the residential construction history. There is still a lot of misunderstanding about them and how they work. We will explore the basics of the air barrier system, their challenges, typical construction tie-in detailing and present a smart solution to air barriers. We will also showcase how a performing air barrier system can save construction costs to achieve code compliance or any other energy efficiency target.
Future challenges of Building Code Implementation:
As we know, most project management and trades work in parallel to each other rather than in an integrated way. The building Code is also written with all its sections independent from one another. We will have a conversation around some of the challenges we are already facing and the ones to come. The 2 main areas of concerns we would like to explore are at a municipal level and also in the building as system. Complying with the Building Code the way it is written today may lead to entire net-zero energy building stock that no-one would be able to live in.
Speaker Bio:
Amelie Caron is a Building Scientist, Principal at EcoSynergy, founded in 2009.
Amelie has been in the residential industry since 2001. Her unique multi-disciplinary expertise can assist design teams in meeting their energy performance targets by providing timely, context-appropriate, and cost-effective solutions.
Amelie has extensive experience in building energy consulting and simulation, she provides technical direction and has participated in several Net-Zero Energy home energy modeling and consultations across the country. She is certified LEED for Homes Green Rater and Energuide Energy Advisor (2001). She obtained a Masters Degree in Building Science and Sustainable at the Danube University Krems in Austria. Her master thesis was a comparison of the NZEH and the Passivhaus in regards to life cycle cost, carbon emissions, construction feasibility and primary energy requirements.
Amelie and her team can assist from design to occupancy of residential projects offering code compliance modelling, optimization to higher-performance, comfort calculations, on-site testing, and troubleshooting and application of Aerobarrier-whole building air tightness technology.

“Get It Right the First Time”

November 19, 2020
1:00 pm – 2:30 pm (central)
Presentation by Mal Smithson

As we know in Canada the “outside environment” and the “inside environment” can have devastating effects on the “build envelope”.  Often the 30 plus trades who work on our houses do not fully understand “why” they need to install their products in a prescribed way. Therefore, it falls upon the builder to know and understand the “why” and relate this information to the trades so they “get it right the first time”. We will start with basic grade 6 physics and how they apply in the “environment” in order to understand the “why”.
Speaker Bio:
Mal brings a unique mix of training and trade skills to PHBI’s classroom. He is the owner/operator of Smithson Enterprises Ltd. and has more than 45 years experience in the construction industry in various supervisor, foreman, and labourer positions for large and small-scale commercial and residential projects. He’s facilitated public speaking and teaching courses for more than 30 years and has a genuine passion for teaching.
